What Is Partial Hospitalization (PHP)?

Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), also called day treatment, provide intensive addiction care without requiring you to stay overnight. You attend programming 5-7 days per week for 4-6 hours daily (typically 20-30 hours total per week). PHP is the highest level of outpatient care—more intensive than IOP but less restrictive than inpatient.

What to Expect

  • Full-day programming (usually 9 AM - 3 PM)
  • Medical monitoring and psychiatry access
  • Individual, group, and family therapy
  • Medication management if needed
  • Return home evenings and weekends

PHP vs. Inpatient vs. IOP

Think of treatment levels on a spectrum:

  • Inpatient/Residential: 24/7 care, live on-site
  • PHP (Partial Hospitalization): Full-day treatment, 20-30 hrs/week, go home nightly
  • IOP (Intensive Outpatient): Part-time treatment, 9-12 hrs/week
  • Standard Outpatient: Weekly sessions, 1-2 hrs/week

PHP bridges the gap between residential and outpatient care, offering intensive support without requiring you to leave your home environment entirely.

Duration and Progression

Most people attend PHP for 2-4 weeks before stepping down to IOP. The goal is stabilization—get your recovery foundation solid, then gradually reduce intensity as you gain skills and confidence. Many insurance plans require PHP before they'll approve IOP.

PHP gives you the structure and medical oversight of hospital-level care while allowing you to sleep in your own bed, maintain family connections, and practice recovery skills in your real environment. It's intensive enough to work but flexible enough to sustain.
