Safe Harbour Society

Safe Harbour Society has been a cornerstone of addiction recovery support in Central Alberta for over two decades. Based in Red Deer at 5246–53 Avenue, Safe Harbour provides medically supported detox, outreach and diversion services, Indigenous support programming, and housing assistance. With a mission centred on creating “spaces of welcome and connection,” the organization meets people where they are and offers a pathway to stability and recovery without barriers.

Medically Supported Detox Services

Safe Harbour operates medically supported detox programming to help individuals safely manage withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepines, and other substances. Detox is the essential first step for many on the road to recovery, and the centre’s medical support ensures that this process is as safe and comfortable as possible. Staff are experienced in the physical and emotional realities of withdrawal, offering compassionate, non-judgmental care throughout.

Outreach, Diversion, and Indigenous Support

Beyond detox, Safe Harbour’s outreach and diversion team connects with individuals in the community — reaching those who may not yet be ready to enter formal treatment. The team provides harm reduction support, crisis intervention, and referrals to appropriate services. Indigenous support programming, including Wellbriety — a culturally grounded recovery approach developed by and for Indigenous communities — ensures that First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals have access to healing that honours their culture and identity.

Housing and Wraparound Community Support

Safe Harbour recognizes that stable housing is foundational to sustained recovery. The organization’s housing services provide transitional support to help clients move out of crisis and into stability. This wraparound model — connecting health, culture, housing, and community — reflects Safe Harbour’s long-standing belief that recovery is about reconnecting with community and rebuilding a life of purpose, not just achieving sobriety.
