Last Door - Youth Program

Last Door’s Youth Program is one of British Columbia’s most established residential addiction treatment programs for young people, serving clients aged 13 to 25 from across Canada. Located at 109 Ash Street in New Westminster, the program is licensed by the BC Health Authority and holds full Accreditation Canada standing. With program lengths ranging from three months to over a year, Last Door provides the depth and duration that meaningful youth recovery requires — combining medical detox, residential treatment, family involvement, education support, and an outdoor therapy retreat into a comprehensive continuum of care.

Social Model and Experience-Based Recovery

Last Door’s approach is grounded in a social model perspective — the belief that environment profoundly shapes behaviour, and that recovery happens through lived experience, not just clinical instruction. Programming creates a recovery-focused, abstinence-supported community where young people develop self-esteem, rebuild relationships, and practice conflict resolution in real time. Daily structure includes individual and group therapy, peer support activities, balanced nutrition, recreation, and community events such as dances, gym sessions, hiking, and sports. A contracted tutor provides educational support so clients don’t fall behind academically during treatment.

Medical Detox, Outdoor Therapy, and Family Support

For youth requiring medical stabilization, a five-day medical detox program precedes residential treatment. The program extends beyond the clinic through outdoor therapy at Last Door’s “Keystone” retreat facility — using nature, challenge, and adventure to build resilience and self-awareness. Family involvement is central to the model: weekly parent groups keep families engaged and informed throughout treatment, recognizing that young people’s recovery is inseparable from the health of the family system. Aftercare and alumni networks maintain connection to the recovery community after discharge.

Comprehensive Substance and Behavioural Treatment

Last Door treats a wide range of substance dependencies including alcohol, cannabis, opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, and benzodiazepines. The program also addresses prescription medication overuse and excessive video gaming — reflecting a modern understanding of addictive behaviour that extends beyond traditional substances. Twelve-step principles, holistic therapies, faith-based programming, relapse prevention, and substance abuse peer counselling are all integrated into the treatment model, offering young people multiple pathways to lasting recovery.
