About

Kapown Treatment Centre is a 32-bed residential addiction recovery facility nestled on the shores of Buffalo Bay in Grouard, Alberta. Serving adults across western Canada, Kapown offers a comprehensive continuum of care: a 56-day residential program, a 42-day outpatient program, and a 6-month sober living option. Funded by the National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program (NNADAP) and recognized as an Official Canadian Substance Use Treatment Centre for First Nations and Inuit, Kapown provides culturally grounded, holistic care in one of Alberta’s most beautiful natural settings.

Holistic and Wilderness-Informed Treatment

Kapown’s approach is distinctly holistic, embracing the physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of healing. The centre’s lakeside setting on Buffalo Bay is not just a backdrop — it is an active part of the therapeutic environment. Wilderness and adventure therapy draw on the healing power of the land, fostering self-reliance, connection to nature, and Indigenous cultural identity alongside traditional counselling approaches. Faith-based programming and dual diagnosis support address the deeper spiritual and mental health dimensions of addiction.

Full Continuum of Care

From intensive residential treatment through outpatient programming and sober living, Kapown supports clients at every stage of their recovery. The 56-day residential program immerses clients in a structured daily routine of individual and group counselling, holistic therapies, dual diagnosis treatment, and cultural programming. The 6-month sober living program provides the extended support that many individuals need to transition successfully to independent living. Aftercare services maintain connection to the recovery community after formal programming ends.

Vocational Rehabilitation and Life Skills

Kapown goes beyond clinical treatment to prepare clients for life in recovery. Vocational rehabilitation programming helps residents develop employment skills, explore career options, and build the practical foundation for long-term self-sufficiency. This emphasis on life skills and economic independence reflects the centre’s understanding that recovery is about building a meaningful, stable life — not just stopping substance use. For First Nations, Inuit, and Métis clients in particular, Kapown offers a rare combination of cultural safety, clinical excellence, and real-world preparation.
