Centre Walgwan

Centre Walgwan is an Indigenous youth addiction treatment centre located in Maria, Quebec, serving Mi’gmaq and Algonquin youth in the Gaspésie and Chaleur Bay region. Dedicated to empowering autonomous, committed, and responsible young Indigenous people, Walgwan provides culturally grounded residential and outpatient treatment that supports youth in taking control of their wellbeing and contributing to their families and communities.

Youth-Centred Residential Treatment

Centre Walgwan offers residential inpatient treatment for Indigenous youth dealing with alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, and opioid addictions. Programming integrates holistic and alternative therapeutic approaches with cultural teachings, Elder involvement, and traditional knowledge in a safe, supportive residential community.

Cultural Empowerment and Identity

At the heart of Walgwan’s philosophy is the belief that strong cultural identity is a foundation for recovery. Programming strengthens youth’s connection to their Mi’gmaq and Algonquin heritage, fostering pride, resilience, and a sense of purpose that sustains recovery beyond the treatment program.

Outpatient and Family Services

Walgwan also provides outpatient services and family involvement programming, recognizing that youth recovery is supported by healthy family and community relationships. These services extend the reach of the centre into the broader community, creating a network of support around each young person in recovery.
