Alcare Place

Alcare Place — now operating as 2 Denarii Society — is a men’s addiction recovery organization in Halifax/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, with over a decade of service to men 19 and older dealing with alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, opioid, and gambling-related addiction. The organization’s history at 1374 Robie Street, Halifax, includes an 11-bed one-year residential programme that provided men with a safe, stable, and supportive live-in environment for long-term recovery. Partnered with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness, Alcare Place was known for its holistic, client-centred approach to sustained sobriety.

Client-Centred and Holistic Recovery Programming

The Alcare Place programme took a holistic, client-centred approach to addiction recovery — addressing the whole person rather than just the substance use. Life skills programming, relapse prevention, anger management, goal setting, and recreation and relaxation classes built practical competencies alongside recovery tools. Individual one-on-one counselling, AA and NA meetings, and family services provided additional layers of professional support and community connection. The programme’s faith-informed ethos and gender-specific men’s community created an environment of mutual accountability and personal growth.

One-Year Residential Model for Lasting Transformation

The original Alcare Place model offered 11 men at a time a full year of live-in recovery programming — a duration that provides meaningful time for genuine personal transformation to take root. The residential programme included nursing care (RN on staff), licensed counselling, and assessment services, reflecting a commitment to professional-quality care within a community living framework. The twelve-step foundation, combined with holistic programming and life skills development, ensured that graduates left with both the practical and personal foundations for sustained sobriety.

Continued Recovery Services as 2 Denarii Society

Following the transition from residential programming in early 2025, 2 Denarii Society continues to serve men in the Halifax-Dartmouth region through a six-week daytime recovery programme in Downtown Dartmouth. The programme’s evolution reflects both the organization’s resilience and the changing landscape of addiction services in Nova Scotia.
